I am a skeptic with GPS feature in PDA or smartphones, especially after the disappointing experience on Nokia N95 GPS. In N95, it took as much as 15 minutes to get a satellite lock, and the battery drained out before you reach your destination. It render the GPS feature virtually useless.
Having the new N82 for over a month, I have not ever try the GPS feature, until I get the chance today. I need to go to Kemang to pickup some stuffs, but it had been years since my last visit to the area and Southern Jakarta are not my playground. I started up Nokia Map (default Map app from Nokia) and only in few seconds it managed to get the satellite lock, eventhough I am still inside the house. I am impressed!
N82 GPS and the Nokia Maps application flawlessly guide me to destination and back home. Voice guide works very well with very clear instruction preceding each turn. It can even recognize the toll road and correctly identified the exits. I charged the battery full before I left and when I return, it only used up 2 bar, out of the 7 power bar for full charged.
I note down few comments to further improve the experience (input for Nokia…) :
- Ability to suppress the phone functionality while navigation is in session (I received 2 phone calls along the way and it creates small panic as I almost missed the turn).
- Found that landmark and location guides are still not too complete. However the map application allow us to add more landmark or site guide ourselves. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone can upload their custom map landmark or site guide and collaboratively compile a more complete Jakarta road map and place of interest?
- A screenshot feature will be nice, so can share location to non Nokia Map users.

Hmmm.. I’m still skeptic for the Idea man.
2 bars battery? Right.. then what would you do for the rest of the day? Recharge at 13pm? I’m still thinking to have separate gedget for GPS and phone - unless the battery usage decrease significantly.
Sorry man…!
